It is not possible to operate the WBGR on a daily basis as the layout is run indepedently of L&BR operations by two local 16mm scale model railway groups, who also maintain the layout.
If you have an active interest in the larger 16mm scale, or the scale is as yet untried territory, then we warmly invite your support, and happy to introduce you to our layout.
Locomotives at the WBGR are in the main privately owned and prized possessions but we can assist non-equipped runners by offering the use of donated units. However, owning your own equipment, if seriously intending to become involved in 16mm scale, is naturally the way forward if you find it ticks all your boxes as a means of amusement.
Reasonably priced battery powered diesel outline kits are a usual way to start if the cost of steam engines is initially, or will always be, out of the question.
Please note that either membership of the Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers, or enrolment as an L&BR Volunteer, is a requirement to run on the layout. This is to satisfy public liability insurance cover. L&BR Volunteer enrolment is just a simple procedure of filling out an application form and receiving approval. You would then be registered with the HOPS (Heritage Operations Processing System) software used for keeping everyone informed and up to date on all matters relevant to our operation.
If visiting runners with own equipment wish to use the layout one of our Group members must be present. Running days are open to current 16mm Association members able to confirm their status through presentation of their personalised insurance certificate.
Before planning a visit please contact our Woody Bay Garden Railway Co-ordinator who will advise you of the L&BR's measures regarding the layout's safety precautions which, as a part of a fully working railway venue, must always be observed. This is for your own safety as well as visiting viewers.
Steam powered units must carry a current working pressure test certificate. Witnessed safety valve testing is available before running if necessary. Boilers over 3 bars/litre are not allowed.
16mm Association Members are advised that our 'Bulletin' update is to be found under the heading 'Lynton& Barnstaple - Woody Gate Garden Railway'.
